In the heart of Tuscany lies a small wine zone, rich in history and tradition, known as Chianti Classico. It extends from south of Florence to north of Siena, among the Chianti hills to the east, and the Pesa and Elsa river valleys in the west. It embraces nine communes: Greve, San Casciano, Tavernelle, Barberino, Radda, Gaiole, Castellina, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Poggibonsi.
This area encloses a motitude of natural variables differentiating the products of the various zones. The soil ranges from limestone to lamellar, while the climate is cooler and more humid among the hills rising between the Pesa, Greve and Arno river valleys and drier and warmer in the hills opening toward the broad Siena basin.
Major producer of Chianti Classico "Gallo Nero", Castelli del Grevepesa is located south of Florence in the Chianti Classico area in the commune of San Casciano Val di Pesa.
Castelli del Grevepesa is a strictly run co-operative of over 180 growers. It was established in 1965 and today has 200 associate farms using the latest techniques to produce a wide range of Chianti Classico including the most popular brand in Florence "Castelgreve". It has 1,000 hectares of specialized vineyards, 650 of which have been judged suitable for the production of Chianti Classico DOCG.
The winery owns 321 fermentation tanks in vitrified concrete for a total of 92,025 hl, complete with 17 stainless steel tanks with a total of 3,689 hl. The cellar has a total capacity of 110,700 hectolitres. The bottling line is semi-automatic and was copletely replaced in 1990.
Castelli del Grevepesa has been able to identify the existence of small areas, or even of single vineyards, where the grapes with most specific traits and qualities are grown. Several of Castelli del Grevepesa wines have won awards.
